SEVEN SEASONS: WORLD 1972-1979
Top International Hockey Tournaments of the 1970s
Prior to the USSR vs. Canada Summit Series in 1972, the international hockey phenomenon
was mostly related to the Olympics, World Championships
and other IIHF events. The Summit 1972 marked the
begining of a new era in the international hockey
when the professional and amateur teams began to
compete in the world hockey events.
In a way, top international hockey
events of the 1970s is a fascinating mix of official
IIHF events and new challenging events like the
Summits in 1972
and 1974 and various
Superseries between the top North American and European
teams on a national and club level. The new "trend"
reached its peak in 1976 with the first Canada Cup
tournament and many more to come in the following
decades.
